Mikel Arteta celebrates new Arsenal record with fresh challenge to Gunners stars
Arsenal enjoyed a record-breaking night in Eindhoven as Mikel Arteta’s men put their goalscoring struggles behind them to utterly destroy PSV with a 7-1 rout Mikel Arteta celebrated an “unbelievable” record-breaking night – and then challenged his Arsenal players to make more history in the Champions League.
Arsenal produced a club record away win and became the first team to score seven away from home in a knock-out tie as they virtually guaranteed themselves a place in the quarter finals. Jurrien Timber, Ethan Nwaneri, Mikel Merino, Martin Odegaard (twice), Leandro Trossard and Riccardo Calafiori were all on target to help Arsenal forget they do not have a fit striker.
Gunners boss Arteta said: “The manner that we’ve done it, the way we played, the goals that we scored. Thank you because it was a special night. It’s obviously given us a lot of joy and confidence and belief. We must enjoy tonight because it was a very impressive performance and an unbelievable score. We deserve that and I’ll take it and keep improving as a team.
“It’s very significant but it’s just to put yourself in a really strong position to go through to the next round. That’s it; that’s the reality. To put landmarks, we have to really make it to a very different level.
“But obviously, this team has done a lot that hasn’t been done in many, many years or in the history of the club. Which means a lot, but that’s not what we want.
“For sure, it’s something that hasn’t been done, to break records tonight, it’s so great to be part of that. But as a team we want to achieve many other things that are far more important than that.
“The happiest thing that I am is because we are in a very strong position to go to the next round, which is where we want to be. But there’s still a job to do in London for sure in a week’s time.
“That’s the beauty of it, nobody in this room, if I give you an envelope and say, can you predict what’s going to happen tomorrow and who is going to score, that’s the beauty of football.
“In football, and you do very well today, put your head down, be humble, analyse how you can improve. Because the next game is going to be completely different to this one, and nobody can write the script, unfortunately, even if we would like to.”
